Step-by-Step Tutorial: Mounting Roller Blinds, Curtain Rods & Heavy Mirrors
Leroy Merlin-style technical manual for drilling tiles without cracking, levelling roller blinds (IKEA TRETUR, Bandalux) and anchoring heavy mirrors over 15 kg.

Before You Begin: Safety Protocol
- Measure window frame width and add 10 to 15 cm on both sides to mark outer bracket centers.
- Project a level horizontal line using a laser level 10 cm above the window lintel.
- If drilling into ceramic tiles, stick masking tape over the drill mark to prevent bit skidding.
📦 Materials Required
- ✓ 1x Complete roller blind unit with chain gear mechanism & brackets
- ✓ 4x Fischer Duopower 6x30mm or 8x40mm nylon plugs
- ✓ 4x 4.5x40mm Phillips screws
- ✓ 1x Roll of anti-slip painter masking tape
- ✓ 1x Folded paper envelope (to catch drilling dust)
🛠️ Recommended Tools
- 🔧 Variable speed cordless drill driver
- 🔧 Tungsten carbide tile & masonry bits (6mm & 8mm)
- 🔧 Self-levelling cross-line laser or 60 cm spirit level
- 🔧 Center punch & small hammer
- 🔧 Manual PH2 Phillips screwdriver
📋 Step-by-Step Project Guide
1. Precision marking using laser level & center punch
Project horizontal laser line above window frame. Mark bracket mounting holes. Tap a center punch gently with a hammer to create a tiny dimple on the masking tape mark.
The center punch dimple pierces tile glaze, locking the drill bit tip so it cannot skid even 1 millimeter.
2. Clean tile drilling with HAMMER MODE OFF
Begin drilling at low RPM with HAMMER MODE OFF. Hold drill 100% perpendicular to the wall. Once the bit penetrates tile thickness into rear masonry brick, switch hammer mode ON.
Tape a folded paper envelope directly below the drill mark; it catches 100% of falling masonry dust.
3. Fischer plug insertion & bracket fastening
Push Fischer 6mm or 8mm plugs flush with tile surface. Fasten blind mounting brackets using a hand screwdriver to avoid cracking plastic clips under cordless drill torque.
Drive final screw turns by hand; you will feel the solid mechanical lock without over-stressing plastic tabs.
4. Fitting blind roller tube & tracking check
Snap pin end of roller blind into side bracket, then press chain gear end into opposite slot. Pull bead chain up and down to confirm fabric rolls straight without telescoping.
If blind fabric telescopes sideways when rolling up, stick a small strip of masking tape onto the bare metal tube on the opposite side.
5. Heavy mirror mounting (>12 kg) with French cleat rails
For large heavy mirrors, screw an aluminum French cleat rail to the wall using 3x 8mm Duopower plugs. Interlock with the mirror's matching rear cleat rail to distribute load horizontally.
A French cleat spreads weight across wall width instead of concentrating load onto 2 shear points.
📊 Technical Specifications Sheet
| Blind side clearance | 10 to 15 cm extension past window frame sides |
|---|---|
| Recommended masonry plug | Fischer SX / Duopower 6x30mm or 8x40mm |
| Heavy mirror anchor (>12kg) | French Cleat bracket rail or M8 wall plug hook |
| Tile drilling technique | Low RPM with HAMMER MODE OFF + carbide bit |
🧱 Wall Anchor Selection Guide for Tenerife
Tiled wall (Bathrooms & Kitchens)
Recommended Plug: Fischer SX 6x30mm or Duopower 6mm plug
💡 Drill tile with HAMMER MODE OFF using a carbide bit. Enable hammer mode only after passing tile depth.
🧹 Maintenance & Aftercare Tips
- Clean roller blind fabric using a cloth damp with mild soapy water; avoid harsh chemical sprays.
- Inspect bead chain operation annually and verify child safety chain tensioner clip.
❓ Frequently Asked Installation Questions
Q: How to drill bathroom or kitchen tiles without chipping glaze?
A: Use a tungsten carbide tile/glass drill bit, apply masking tape over the mark, and NEVER activate hammer mode until fully drilling through the ceramic tile layer.
Q: Which wall plugs to use for hanging a heavy 20 kg mirror on hollow block?
A: Use at least 2 heavy-duty M8 safety hooks paired with Fischer Duopower 8x40mm or 10x50mm plugs seated solidly into hollow concrete block webs.
